He loves guns and playing at soldiers, which could come in handy because Star Trek fans want to kill him…
Although still only in his early twenties, Tom hardy has already worked with some of Hollywood’s leading directors – Steven Spielberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, Ridley Scott and Sofia Coppola. But it hasn’t been an easy ride for the young Londoner. He’s had his balls gaffer-tapes, been attacked by Star Trek fans and forced to wear dresses by his Mother….
Your first job out of drama school was Band of Brothers, a Spielberg production with Tom Hands and David Schwimmer. In at the deep end?
Yeah, that was a baptism of fire. I even had a sex scene. She was gorgeous….I was terrified! It wasn’t half as closed a set as I thought it was gonna be. They kept saying they could see my pants, so I wound up with a flesh-coloured pouch gaffer-taped over me balls! Took a load of hair out when I ripped it of after. Band of Brazilians, more like!
Then came Black Hawk Down. Like playing soldiers?
Yeah! I wanted to join the army when I was younger. I still fancy it, but I don’t know if I could hack it. I get bored too easily. On Black Hawk Down we had a really cracking week at Fort Benning in Georgia, learning room clearance, house clearance, how you move through a city…shooting M-15s.
The ultimate boy’s fantasy?
Well, yeah! But I’d already been around guns a bit. My Dad had a firearms certificate and we used to shoot rifles, semi-automatic pistols…things like that. I like guns. One of the instructors at Fort Benning said I had a good eye.
You were also in Star Trek: Nemesis. Are you a Trekkie?
Ummm….well my friends call me Spock now. I saw in a magazine somewhere this “Seven Reasons for the Death of Trek” thing. I was one of them! They fucking hated me! But then you get some of them saying (adopts American geek accent) “Nemesis rocked man!” They’re a mixed bunch, the Trekkies. I’ve been to a few conventions.
Really? Is it like Galaxy Quest?
Yeah, it is a bit like that actually. But anyone who has that amount of passion and dedication to something…it’s an admirable quality in some ways.
This is the part where we ask you about fashion…
[Gestures down at his T-shirt, combat shorts and trainers] I’m fucked then, aren’t I? I’m not a dedicated follower. When I want to scrub up I wear Dunhill suits, maybe ted Baker. My “Dorchester security” look. And I’ve got loads of trainers: Air Force Ones, Air Max, Jordan Fives…but what I really like is women’s shoes. Strappy heels and all that…I’m always looking out for women’s shoes. I buy my agent shoes.
So it’s not a cross-dressing thing?
Well, my Mum makes dresses so I’ve had to be pinned into a few dresses in my time….anything to oblige.
No surprise you became an actor then?
There you go! Two plus two…
